Road Trip – Day 10

Canberra

Starting the day we another hearty breakfast we headed out to the Deep Space communication Station. This is one of three places in the world that tracks objects & satellites in space. It is in fact connected directly to Nasa.

We also tried to visit the Observatory but it was closed for Xmas. We got to the Parliament and went for a walk around. You can walk around almost anywhere in this place, which is quite strange as any where else in the world there would be concrete barriers and police everywhere. The police are around but typically on mountain bikes. It is quite an impressive building, but quite frankly has some shocking architectural qualities so I found it ghastly in places. As we left and Andreas took his obligatory football shirt photo.

We then headed into the city.

Now it Canberra to me comes across as somewhere similar to Maastricht. A place where politicians stay in but don’t really live. There are many things to do here but I don’t know if it is a place I could live in.

We headed into town and found it quite lackluster. We found an Irish pub and grabbed a couple of Guinness- after all it is good for you!

In the evening we headed back into the centre and found what appeared the only five restaurants open. They were part of a new shopping centre so were very busy. Like everywhere else in the world the centre had taken all the business from the main centre, which had now become a ghost town. The meal was pretty good at Wagamama, kind of Japanese Fusion. A restaurant chain that originated in the UK.

We headed to the Irish bar again for a night cap then hit the sack.
