Sorrento to Bega
We were up relatively early and got out of the hostel as quick as we could. Driving down the road to the local cafe to have breakfast.
The original idea was to stop off at some nearby wineries – after all this was the Mornington Peninsula. But it was only about 8am and frankly we couldn’t be bothered to hang around. So we hit the road.
As it was early we decided to head down to Wilsons Promontory. This is the most southerly point of Australia. As we were in the neighbourhood, we thought it would be silly to miss. We eventually got there by driving about 50Km off our main route. The place was magnificent and far exceeded our expectations, certainly on par or just above that of the Great Ocean road.
We spent several hours out of the car down on the beaches, even managing to grab a swim. We ventured on Squeaky Beach – which seems a very strange name until you actually start to walk on it. Yes you guessed correctly the sand actually squeaked when you walked across it.. A very strange experience indeed.
We hit the road again and started to drive. As we decided to take the coastal route we headed for Bega. By the time we got there it was close to 10pm. There were no vacancies anywhere. Andreas and I ended up sleeping in the car (a good job we bought the sleeping bags)
