Barossa (Angaston) – Mt Gambier
So we headed off early to Adelaide. It didn’t take long to get there as it is only 70Km down the road.
Adelaide is a strange place! So Interesting that we didn’t even get out of the car. It was almost as though we had entered an early eighties time warp – old buildings and not much to see or do.
We decided very quickly to head down to a ‘German’ town called Hahndorf (which had been mentioned to me before we left). Another interesting place, some would say quaint. It was lunch time so we headed straight to the pub.
The German Arms Hotel was the place we headed for. Outside it appeared to be a typical small pub similar to those you get in the UK. Inside was like stepping into a Tardis – it was massive. I had not seen so many tables for a long time. We sat down outside and had lunch. The portions were massive and both Andreas and I struggled to eat them. The food was superb!
After lunch we hit the road south. We knew we were heading in the direction of Mount Gambier but that was all. We drove for a reasonable while, not seeing much along the away apart from the token wind farm. It was Xmas Eve so it was relatively quiet.
We got to Mount Gambier at about 5pm, and fortunately found a Hotel that was open and some fuel. It seems a far cry from the UK were almost everything would be shut!
The Hotel was empty (about another three guests), so we had the swimming pool and sauna to ourselves. Sampling the leftover lunch for our supper along with the odd Barossa bottle of wine, we then spent several hours chilling out in the pool & sauna. This was to include another bottle of wine and several Coronas of course!
As the Icelandic fraternity celebrate Xmas today, we decided to open our presents sent from home.
